The legendary Magazyn Materiałów Literackich “Cegła” (Literary Materials Magazine “Cegła”) in Katowice for the first time!
“There is no doubt that Literary Materials Magazine ‘Cegła’, initially an art zine created by a group of enthusiasts from Kolegium Karkonoskie and, for many years now, Wrocław’s most alternative and liberatic poetry magazine, is both a brand and an object that transcends the conventions of periodical publishing. It focuses more on the performative aspects of engaging with various forms or practices of language than on literature itself and the cult of the work (the volume, the book). The significance of successive issues as art objects, initiating the blurring of boundaries between acting through literature (or with its aid) and writing and reading, cannot be questioned. ‘It is, in fact, an entire set of phenomena and events whose outcome is an artefact produced with ingenuity and precision — an object referred to as an issue of the magazine,’ wrote Wrocław-based critic Marta Koronkiewicz in her text on ‘Cegła’, published in the volume Rozkład jazdy (2012).”

MML “Cegła” is a literary magazine from Wrocław, published since 2001 under the editorship of Karol Pęcherz. Since 2006, Karolina Maria Wiśniewska has been responsible for its graphic concept. Combining literature and design, the magazine encourages creative encounters between young authors of poetry, prose and literary criticism and established writers. Each issue is a unique, unconventional publishing project that goes far beyond the traditional forms of magazines. A packet of cigarettes, a “flirt” card game, Christmas wafers, a reflection in a mirror or “Cegła” printed on banknotes — these are just some of the ideas that have been brought to life. Each issue is devoted to a different theme.
The exhibition will feature all 52 issues of “Cegła”, published between 2001 and 2025, as well as a collection of artefacts related to the life of the editorial team.
The exhibition is part of Metropolitan Design Week.
