BODIES’ CHOIR voice – body – space — sound-based activities with Joanna Pawlik

In her work, she proposes a radical strategy of presence: the disabled, female body, exposed to the gaze of others, becomes a medium of art and a tool of social critique. Drawing on the tradition of feminist art, Pawlik introduces a disability studies perspective, redefining the significance of bodies that deviate from the norm. Her practice has a political dimension — it is a form of resistance to marginalisation and an attempt to imagine new forms of community.
Joanna Pawlik begins with her own intimate experience of disability, then broadens the scope of the issue by incorporating the work of non-professional artists into her exhibitions. By creating coherent statements together with other “performers of life” in the form of exhibitions she curates and performances she directs, she transforms the significance of amateur works. In Pawlik’s practice, the process of creating the works becomes as important as their “autonomous” existence. Establishing relationships, breaking down barriers, repeating improvised stories, as well as increasing the social activity of disabled people are at the heart of Joanna Pawlik’s artistic practice. The artist strives for change, seeking to facilitate their own particular “coming out”, understood literally as leaving the house. She herself had to confront “staring” when, after years of experiencing shame, she disclosed her disability by making her personal artistic works public.
