‘Referential Spaces’ by Mischa Kuball – exhibition as part of the XXXI Ars Cameralis Festival

The exhibition Referential Spaces is the first retrospective presentation of Mischa Kuball’s output from the last three decades. That being so, the Katowice BWA Gallery presents an array of works that provide complete insight into the vision and mission of this German artist. The display includes a series of fascinating concept-based light installations, a showcase of fundamental projects dedicated to public space, as well as works that revolve around the foundations of modernity. Kuball’s site-specific works, while referring to social and political issues, allow the artist to probe into public spaces and question our perception of what we consider to be our familiar environment.

Curator: Marek Zieliński

The vernissage will begin at 6 pm on 18 Nowember 2022.
The exhibition will run until 29 January 2023.

A Polish Sign Language interpreter has been arranged for the vernissage.
Please note that the exhibition includes light effects that might affect vulnerable viewers.

MISCHA KUBALL — was born in 1959 in Düsseldorf, where he still lives and works. He is one of the main conceptual artists in Germany and a creator of complex installations. Mischa Kuball creates site-specific works in various locations in the world and his realisations are often strongly related to local architecture and public space. The artist seems to be enraptured by light and makes extensive use of reflectors, light balls, mirror foil and projectors. His works bring to mind the Platonic allegory of the cave – with the physical world versus the realm of ideas – and Kantian theories, wherein light is linked to moral and ethical judgement. Since 2007, Mischa Kuball has been the only professor of art in public space in Germany – he received this title from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne (KHM Kunsthochschule fuer Medien Köln). He is also a professor of media art at Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (Hochschule für Gestaltung / ZKM, Karlsruhe).
