Reflection: A Hole in the Stone — sculpture exhibition of 17 Belgian artists

Reflection: A Hole in the Stone is a contemporary sculpture exhibition featuring the works of 17 Belgian artists who specialize in stone. This exhibition provides a unique platform to showcase sculptures that explore the concept of the hole in diverse ways – as a symbol of absence, emptiness, but also openness and possibility.

Holes in stone are more than just a physical feature; they represent a deep investigation of matter and our perception of it. By developing a sense of the stone’s interior, we uncover a unique intimacy that visually brings us closer to this solid material. Moreover, the combination of void and substance creates a distinctive dialogue that challenges the materiality of stone, where holes do not signify absence. On the contrary, from these voids emerges an entire reflection – one that is technical, symbolic, and aesthetic at once. Holes in stone allow us to play with light and shadow, oscillating between the fragility of structure and the innate solidity of stone. Engaging with stone through this particular lens means contemplating visibility through it. Creating a reflection within the stone rather than on it invites us to understand the limits of its fragility. The visual transparency achieved in this way – paradoxical in such a solid material – reveals a new dimension. To carve into stone is not an act of destruction, but rather a way to explore the material’s depth and complexity. This approach unveils not only the raw beauty of stone but also the intricacies of its inner layers, offering us a new and enriching perspective.

The works presented in the exhibition showcase a wide range of techniques and styles, from minimalist forms to intricate, organic structures. The hole in the stone becomes a metaphor, encouraging reflection on space, materiality, and the role of negative space in art. Each artist contributes a unique perspective, creating a dialogue between cultures and sculptural traditions.

This exhibition not only allows for admiration of stoneworking mastery but also raises questions about the nature of art and its interaction with the environment. A Hole in the Stone is a rare opportunity to see how a universal theme can be interpreted in infinitely varied ways, inspiring a deeper understanding and appreciation of contemporary sculpture.
